Neumann, Shin Etsu in the path of Ida

Hurricane Ida has shut down the Port of New Orleans, likely halting imports and exports while the state of Louisiana recovers from the storm. Imports through the were already down before the storm, falling 20.7% year over year in Q2 and 24.9% in July. Imports are varied, but one of the largest is coffee, which saw an increase of 4.2% year over year in Q2 but fell by 22.0% year over year in July. Neumann Gruppe was the largest importer of those products, accounting for 407 TEU. Automotive products also increased in Q2, by 39.8%, but then fell by 17.3% in July. Most of the imports through the state come from Mexico, but those fell by 44.5% year over year in Q2, while the second largest source, Europe, fell by 9.1%. Exports, especially petrochemical related goods, are also an important part of the Louisiana economy with chemical company Shin Etsu shipping 5,432 in Q2 and International Paper shipping 1,208 TEU in the same period.

GM nearshoring, still faces chip-related closures

General Motors has announced the closure of their factories in North America due to a shortage of chips, following the same issues from Toyota and Nissan in recent months. This comes even as imports of semiconductors to the U.S. have risen by 51.4% year over year in the second quarter, but likely hides the difficulty of manufacturers who need custom chips for their own designs. The imports, driven by chips, which gained 60.3% year over year in Q2, are likely the height of current manufacturing capacity, and chip makers are incentivized to manufacture more generic items in higher quantities to maximize output.
This has hit GM even after Panjiva data showed a focus on nearshoring and risk reduction after the pandemic, with U.S. imports from Mexico increasing from 26.5% of shipments in 2019 to 50.3% in the first seven months of 2021. Imports also consolidated around known manufacturing centers like China, South Korea, and Europe, while imports from other countries lost share. This consolidation likely gives additional control to GM and allows them to manage risk more efficiently.

Greif raises prices, boosts imports in packaging expansion

Greif, a packaging company, released FQ3 earnings covering the three months to July 31. The firm reported a 37.7% year-over-year increase in revenues that surpassed analyst expectations by 7.4%, while Panjiva data associated with the firm showed a 112.2% year-over-year increase in volumes. The company is benefiting from strong demand but facing headwinds in supply chain disruptions and inflation, CEO Peter Watson noted, continuing that they were “actively executing on price increases in response to robust demand and cost inflation.” The company has been moving sourcing as well, Panjiva data suggests, moving away from China which fell from 43.0% of total imports in 2016 to 20.6% in the first seven months of 2021, and increasing activity in India and Italy, up 11.8 percentage points and 12.7 percentage points respectively in the same period. Imports by product in FQ3 were positive as well, with imports of plastic packaging up 13.4% year over year and caps and lids by 26.0% in the same period. The company may also be investing in additional capacity, as imports of packaging machinery increased by 53.5% year over year from a small base.

GM squeaks by pre-pandemic levels, Mexico disputes RoO requirements

Mexico has launched a formal dispute under USMCA for proposed rule of origin (RoO) requirements that were stricter than originally thought. This may be a more fundamental dispute than the labor issue that was recently resolved through the process. The root of the concerns may be Mexican exports that have stayed well below pre-pandemic levels, down 10.1% and 14.5% against 2019 in the Q2 and July. Passenger cars are down the most, down 37.9% in July against 2019, and Mexico may be worried that stricter RoO will continue to depress exports already impacted by the chip shortage. Companies that are feeling those effects include General Motors, alone with a 2.8% year over year increase against 2019 in July, and Nissan, Stellantis, Ford, and Volkswagen who all saw exports in the same period down 21.6%, 37.9%, 42.5%, and 60.2% respectively.
